Late September.
At a park in the middle of the night, just the two of us, Kohinata-san and I.

After Misaki had fallen asleep, Kohinata-san came to visit my room.
She said she had a favor to ask, and I nodded immediately. There was no reason to refuse Kohinata-san.

We stood facing each other near the entrance of the park we had visited.

The surrounding houses were sound asleep, but a streetlight stood right next to us, making it bright enough for me to see Kohinata-san's face clearly.

Kohinata-san was wearing something different from her usual tracksuit. Perhaps because it was cold tonight, she had thrown on a warm-looking coat. However, she was wearing a skirt on her lower half, and instead of her orange tracksuit pants, she wore black tights. And in her hands, she held a large envelope, clutching it as if it were something precious.

The moment I saw that envelope, I realized everything.

Kohinata-san's favor was, without a doubt, asking me to read the manga inside that envelope and give her my thoughts. Her strange behavior and her flushed face were surely because of that.

I was about to be forced to read smut.

I didn't mind the reading itself.
The problem was being asked for my thoughts.

In a situation like this, what would be the right thing to do?
When the woman who always looks after me asks for my opinion on the "adult" manga she drew, what on earth is the correct response?

*It was super exciting!*

I see—that's a straightforward, albeit amateurish, reaction. But if I said that, I couldn't deny the impression that I was just giving a half-hearted answer. If she asked, "Specifically, what parts were exciting?" I'd be finished.

Conversely, suppose I had been specific from the start.
*What a pervert.* It wouldn't be surprising if she cut ties with me immediately.

Alright, let's change my perspective.
The manga I'm about to read is definitely something Misaki should never see. However, it is also certain that this is a manga Kohinata-san drew with all her heart.

In that case, I will face it seriously, as a fellow reader.

"...Please."
"Yeah, alright."

I accepted the envelope Kohinata-san held out to me. It had some decent thickness, and inside was a bundle of papers that appeared to be manga manuscripts.

I glanced at Kohinata-san once.
Her face was so red she looked like she might boil over at any moment, and she was staring at me.

In her eyes, there was likely a tension born of shame... and a sense of earnestness.

That's right, this manga really is something Kohinata-san drew with all her heart. I must never look at her as just a woman who makes her man read smut to get his feedback.

The person before me is Kohinata-san, the manga artist.
And I am the honored reader she has chosen.

"I'm reading it."
"...Yes, please."

I took a shallow breath and slowly pulled out the manuscript.

"...Whoa."

An exclamation escaped my lips involuntarily.
I thought this when I first saw her work, but Kohinata-san is quite good at drawing.

I was probably looking at what served as the cover. It depicted two characters, a man and a woman, with a man in a suit in the background and a woman at a desk in the foreground, writing something.

The backgrounds for each character were well-rendered; I could tell the moment I saw the art that the man was walking through a city and the woman was inside a room.

...Is this really smut, just from the cover?

Setting that question aside for now, I turned to the next page.

To put it simply, it wasn't smut.
It was the kind of content I could feel safe letting Misaki read.

The story began with the female protagonist leaving her room.

She lived in an apartment, and it seemed she was afraid of the man with the fierce eyes who lived in the next room.

However, one day, she saw him with a wide, beaming smile.

Curious, she seemingly couldn't sleep that night. But the following day, she saw the man looking like he was on the verge of death. She instinctively called out to him, and that became the catalyst for the two of them talking many times.

And then, the very last page.

The woman was saying something to the man.
The man had a serious expression as he replied to her.

I couldn't tell what was said.
Because there wasn't a single line of dialogue in this manga. While the story was easy to follow through the art alone and was honestly quite interesting, I couldn't help but wonder about this part. What kind of conversation did these two have?

"Thank you. It was interesting."

I gave my honest impression and returned the manga to Kohinata-san.

"...Thank you very much."

Kohinata-san accepted the envelope, still looking nervous, and hugged it close to her chest as if it were precious.

"..."
"..."

Should I say something?
If I did, I'd want to ask about that final scene, but I also felt like Kohinata-san wanted to say something.

"...Um."

After waiting a moment, Kohinata-san spoke.
Her expression was even more strained than before I started reading; I could tell she was incredibly nervous.

"...That, last, scene."
"Oh, that scene."

It was exactly the scene I had been wondering about.
Did Kohinata-san have something on her mind too?

"..."

She took a deep breath.

"...*Cough, hack!*"

Ah, she choked.

"............"

She shrank back. It seemed she was embarrassed.

"Kohinata-san, calm down."
"...Y-yes!"

Another deep breath.

"...That, last scene. The two of them... what do you think happened to them?"

That was an unexpected question.
That was exactly what I wanted to ask her.

"...What do you think happened to them?"

Moreover, her expression was more serious than ever.
I suppose I have to give a serious answer...

"The woman was saying something to the man, right?"
"...Yes."

Something... Kohinata-san is surely seeking that "something." I don't know why there was no dialogue, but there must be a profound meaning in her asking me this.

Think. What kind of story was that manga...?

The plot was very simple: a man and a woman become close... wait. I feel like I've seen that manga somewhere before... Where? Where did I see it?

The female protagonist was initially afraid of the man, but through a certain catalyst, they started talking, and eventually grew close. That story felt strangely familiar.

"..."
"..."

Kohinata-san waited for my words, her lips pressed tightly together.
Looking at her expression, I suddenly remembered the manga I had just read.

...It's the same.

The woman looking at the man on the last page and Kohinata-san standing before me overlapped.

...I see. So that's what it was.

I finally understood.
The meaning behind Kohinata-san making me read that manga, and the reason there was no dialogue.

The models for those two are surely me and Kohinata-san.
If so, this is undoubtedly Kohinata-san's question to me.

"They..."

After a long silence, I spoke.
Looking into Kohinata-san's eyes as she waited anxiously for my words, I gave a short reply.

"They... probably became \[something\], didn't they?"

Hearing my words, Kohinata-san...

"..."

With a faint sigh, she gave a soft smile.

Interlude: Sprouting — End

*Thank you for your feedback every time. It really gives me strength!*
