December 24th.
Yui was working again today.

It was just past noon.
She was eating lunch in the company cafeteria with her junior, MorinoForest field UmiSea not yet.

Perhaps because the cafeteria was also used by non-employees, the interior was quite well-maintained. The table arrangement was spacious, so even when it was full, it never felt cramped.

The two of them were using a small, round table.
Yui had ordered the daily lunch special, which today consisted of a round bun topped with sesame seeds and margarine, a salad, and a corn soup set. Her junior, Morino, ordered the same as Yui but chose iced coffee as her drink.

"Senpai, you always just have water, don't you?"
"Once you get used to it, it has a certain depth to it."
"...I see?"

It had been over a year since Yui had become Morino's mentor. Recently, Morino had become capable of handling business negotiations on her own, so the time they spent working together was decreasing.

However, having spent so much time together, the two had become like close friends. Of course, there was a clear hierarchy, but they often shared meals like this.

That said, they didn't talk much.
Today, as usual, they were eating in silence, but when Morino suddenly began blowing bubbles in her iced coffee with a straw, Yui spoke up, wondering if something was wrong.

"Is something troubling you?"
"...When I look around, I see all these people going, 'Mommy\~, look at the tree\~'... and meanwhile, it's Christmas Eve and I'm working... work... work, work is so much fun\~ *glub glub*\~"

Judging immediately that the situation was severe, Yui attempted to provide some mental support.

"Morino-san, this is the season to make money."
"It's easy for you, Senpai. You're already married and have a daughter. But me... I'm so lonely."

Hearing Morino's response, Yui found herself at a loss for words.
It was one of the few topics she found difficult to navigate.

"If you'd like, I could introduce you to a wonderful single man?"

With a clatter, Morino stood up.

"Please do!"
"Morino-san, please calm down."

Prompted by the remark, Morino sat back down, looking slightly embarrassed.
But she wasn't the type to be calmed so easily.

"I've just been feeling so rushed lately! When I listen to men talking, I hear things like, 'Women are only good until twenty-five,' and I'm like, 'What am I going to do?! I'll be past my expiration date in two years!' That's how I feel!"

*This junior hasn't grown an inch as a human being,* Yui thought as she quietly sipped her water. But then, a certain phrase caused her to freeze mid-sip.

"...Expiration date?"
"Yes. Like, women lose their charm once they pass twenty-five... those guys must be lolicon bastards."
"...Yes, I suppose they are."

Incidentally, Yui would be turning twenty-five on January 1st.

"I envy you, Senpai. You have a wonderful husband, a cute daughter, and you're so successful at work..."
"I am simply doing what needs to be done."

Yui maintained her composure.
Internally, however, she was more shaken than ever.

At the company, it was understood that she had a family, but of course, that was a lie.
It was true that she had a daughter, but they shared no blood relation.

In other words, regarding matters of romance or marriage, Yui was no different from the junior sitting before her.

She had been approached with marriage proposals several times.
But Yui's heart had never once stirred.

Because Yui's first love was still ongoing.

"I'm looking forward to that man you're going to introduce me to, Senpai!"
"...Yes, please do."

She couldn't say it. She could never tell the truth.

"By the way, there are a few things I wanted to ask..."

Yui had an intuition that she should not hear the rest of the question.

"Morino-san,"
"I mean, was it... was it painful the first time?!"

She was too late.

"...Um, how was it?"

A flicker of tension and anticipation.
Of course, Yui did not have an answer to her question.

Thinking it over, not answering would have been the most correct choice. However, seeing the expectation in the girl's eyes, Yui felt a strange sense of duty.

"There was no pain whatsoever."
"Really?"
"Yes. Pain is powerless before love. To use an analogy... yes, it's like putting in a tampon."

Yui didn't even know what she was saying.

"Um... ah, so it was thin, then."
"..."

She knew, at the very least, that she had made a catastrophic slip of the tongue.

"Ah! I mean! Senpai, you're a tampon user, aren't you\~!"
"..."

Morino said, trying to cover for her.
However, the awkward atmosphere refused to dissipate.

Yui could say nothing.
She couldn't exactly admit that she was actually too scared to use tampons.

"...Um, I won't tell anyone!"
"Let's stop this conversation right now."

Yui spoke firmly.

"...Um, I'm sorry."
"Today, we had no conversation whatsoever. Understood?"
"...Yes. Miss Senpai and I had no conversation whatsoever."

December 25th.
Yui was scheduled to work again today.

"Mommy! Mommy, look, Mommy! Look at this, Mommy! A present! A present from Santa-san!"

In the morning.
As Yui, who had woken up at her usual time, was preparing breakfast in the kitchen, Yui came running in with a bright voice, having woken up earlier than usual.

"Yes, congratulations. But first, let's wash your face."
"Washie!"
"Don't forget to brush your teeth, too."
"Brushie!"

With energetic replies, Yui went running off.
Watching her retreating figure, Yui smiled contentedly.

A few minutes later.

"Itadakimasu!"
"Yes, let's eat."

The two sat around the table as usual and pressed their hands together.
Today, another guest sat in the chair next to Yui: a large teddy bear.

"Mr. Bear, these are pancakes!"

Yui spoke to the stuffed animal.

"Oh, they look delicious!"

Yui played the role of the stuffed animal.

"You have to eat them quickly, or they'll get cold\~!"

Yui played the role of the pancake.

Since it was Christmas, today's breakfast consisted of pancakes and cola, a carbonated drink they didn't usually have.

It was actually the same menu as last year, and Yui had been talking about how much she was looking forward to it for about a week.

"From today, I'm sleeping with Mr. Bear!"
"I see. I'm a little worried since you're a restless sleeper, Yui."
"Mr. Bear is tough!"

She said with a proud expression before taking a bite of her pancake.
She chewed several times and swallowed.

"Christmas!"
"Yes, it is Christmas."

Hearing the comment born from her unique sensibility, Yui's shoulders shook slightly.

"Today is Ryo-kun's birthday!"

With that one sentence, Yui could anticipate the next.

"Let's make an appeal!"
"We will not."
"We shall!"

*Here we go again,* Yui sighed inwardly.
Just like yesterday, it was talk of romance.

Yui felt she absolutely could not forgive the Japanese marketing strategies that distorted the meaning of Christmas—a day originally meant to celebrate the birth of God. In Yui's case, she was likely reacting purely to the fact that it was a birthday, but still...

"Yui, I've told you many times, but Mommy doesn't look at him as that kind of target."
"I want to see Mommy in a wedding dress!"

*Good grief,* Yui thought.

Even Yui had some desire for marriage. She had no intention of taking that "expiration date" talk from yesterday seriously, but she was at an age where it wouldn't be strange to be married.

That didn't mean she thought marriage was a good thing just for the sake of it.
If she were to marry, she wanted to be joined with someone she truly loved.

Yui was not a child anymore.
She wasn't delusional enough to think that the other person would still remember something that happened ten years ago. In the first place, there was a possibility that he was already married.

Even so, these feelings would not change.

"Mommy might wear a wedding dress someday. However, there is no possibility that the partner will be him."
"Why?!"
"Because I hate him."
"Hate is just another side of love!"

Her daughter's relentless campaigning wouldn't stop.
Why was he so well-liked?

It was true that he had helped her.
Thanks to him, she had gained time that she could never have obtained alone.
And using that time, she had created irreplaceable memories with Yui.

She was grateful for that.
But that was all.

To Yui, it might look like Yui was conscious of him.

It would be a lie to say she wasn't conscious of him.

But this was just because she saw his color, which made her remember that man, and thus made her curious.

The idea that the two were the same person was impossible.
But, if...

"Look! Mommy has a cute face!"
"...Yui, we're having cake tonight."
"Cake!"
"...Strawberries and tomatoes are quite similar, aren't they?"
"Treason! Treason against cake!"

Yui had wielded her authority!
Yui pounded on the table in protest!

However! Tomatoes appeared at dinner!

December 26th.
Yui was working again today.

After handling several business negotiations in the morning, she used a family restaurant nearby for lunch.

Perhaps because the winter holidays had begun, there were many young people in the restaurant. Of course, there were adults in suits like Yui, but most were couples or families.

*—Today is Ryo-kun's birthday!*

"Why does that keep coming up...?"

Yui whispered to herself and waved her hand dismissively.

Perhaps because she had heard the same topic two days in a row, she found herself thinking about marriage whenever her guard was down.

If that were all, it wouldn't be a problem, but it was infuriating because the same person popped into her head every single time.

*Let's be calm.*

She knew more people who were more attractive than him than she had fingers on both hands.

Men working at top-tier companies, men who had succeeded by starting their own businesses. She knew many men who earned hundreds of millions of yen and were also gentlemanly and charming. Some of them had even asked her out.

She had turned them all down, but they were all men far more wonderful than him.

For example...

Suppose she actually married someone like him.
There was no way a happy home would exist there.

For example, Yui, who was more precious to her than her own life.
For some reason, Yui was very attached to him. Furthermore, he was unexpectedly good at looking after others. She knew he was working hard to raise Misaki-chan, who had been thrust upon him. Looking at how he treated Misaki-chan, one could tell what kind of father he would be to a child. In that sense, he would surely be a good father to Yui—

"He won't be!"

Yui slammed her fist on the table.
The surrounding eyes gathered on her as if something had happened, but it was only for a moment.

Yui let out a long breath and gulped down her water in one go.

*Calm down.*

Whether a marriage partner would be a good father to her daughter was an important point, but she would forget it for now.

She would think about what she personally felt about him.
Excluding factors like "he looks like that person," she would think about that unnecessarily tall man.

She had many opportunities to see him, for better or worse.
Since she was Misaki-chan's mother on paper, she had to see him at various elementary school-related events whether she liked it or not. Separately, since Yui and Misaki-chan were close, they saw each other through that relationship as well.

It was truly lamentable, but for the current Yui, he was undoubtedly the man closest to her.

However, even so.

After spending so much time together, had there been any event that truly left a mark on her heart?
Normally, after a year of knowing someone, at least one wonderful memory is born. But in his case—

*—Become my friend.*

"Nngghhh!"

Yui pressed her head against the table and rubbed it vigorously.

That was...

Because...

That doesn't count!
That was an accident!
It doesn't count!

Hehe, if you exclude that, my memories with him are—

*—Thank you so much for today!*

"That was meee!"

An indescribable surge of emotion welled up, and Yui began to flail.
She pressed her head even harder against the table and stomped her feet against the floor.

Fortunately, none of her acquaintances were around, but even if they had been, they certainly wouldn't have suspected that this person was Yui Tosaki.

...Ah, how embarrassing.
It is the greatest stain on my life.
Why did I act like such a child!

"Nngghhh!"

Yui continued to flail, completely forgetting she was in public.
After flailing for several seconds, she snapped back to her senses.

"It's time."

Yui spoke aloud without thinking and stood up.
She finished paying, left the restaurant, and headed straight for her next job—on the way.

...Why are you here?

"Yo, working today too?"

...It's not "Yo."
Do you have any idea what kind of—I'm a mess!

"..."

...Wait, why is my mind going blank?

What was the situation again?
If I recall... yes, a greeting, let's greet him.
I'll greet him and then hurry off to work.

Ready, set.

"Yes, that's right, it's work, so..."

What was that greeting just now... how strange, that's not like me.
...Ah, geez! What is this!!

Yui's expression stiffened as she hurried away.
However, no matter how much she walked, he wouldn't leave her mind.
