December 25th.

On this day, Ryousei turned 25.
And at the same time, it became an unforgettable day for him.

The next day.
Ryousei woke up as usual and spent a Misaki-colored morning.

The company was closed, and he had no particular plans for the day.
Because of that, he had intended to spend the whole day playing with Misaki before he went to sleep, but now he was having second thoughts.

*Shouldn't I give Misaki a Christmas present or something?*

Ryousei didn't have any special memories of Christmas, but he possessed the knowledge as a matter of common sense. For example, the kind lie called Santa Claus that brings joy to children... the thought suddenly drifted into his mind.

Christmas had already passed, but it wouldn't be wrong to give her something now.

With that thought, he looked toward Misaki.
She was in the same shabby apartment as always, but Misaki herself looked radiant. Behind her was a wall made of rotting wood, but it was so radiant that one would believe it was made of the finest materials if told so.

And what about the pure white futon spread beneath Misaki?
If that were ever put up for auction, Ryousei would surely go into debt just to get his hands on it.

Setting that aside, the present.
Misaki seemed to have been drawing since this morning, so he wondered if she would be happy if he bought her some related tools.

"Misaki?"

While he was pondering what to give her, Misaki suddenly stood up. She walked straight toward Ryousei, who was sitting on the futon, with a piece of paper in one hand.

"..."

Misaki pursed her lips into a straight line and held the paper with both hands.
Thinking she was going to show him the picture she had been drawing, Ryousei turned his eyes to the paper.

A single woman was drawn there.
*Holy crap, Misaki is insanely good!* he thought, while simultaneously noticing that the subject looked strangely familiar.

"Ryo-kun."

Misaki spoke up immediately.
Ryousei's eyes widened in surprise.

"Present."

Misaki held the drawing out to Ryousei, looking a little bashful.

"...Misaki!"

Overcome with emotion, Ryousei grabbed Misaki by her sides and lifted her up. Misaki flailed her arms and legs in surprise, but her expression looked very happy.

"Thanks, Misaki! This is the best present ever!"
"...Hehe."

After giving her a quick spin, Ryousei set Misaki back down on the futon. He then took the drawing and, with a blissful expression, placed it into a storage box he had made from cardboard.

Immediately after, with agile movements, he pulled a change of clothes from another box and began to undress.

"Just you wait, Misaki! Ryo-kun is going shopping right now!"

There was no longer any room for hesitation.
He was going to buy a present! He was definitely buying one!

"...Going out?"

Misaki stood right next to Ryousei, tilting her head as she asked.

"Yeah, look forward to it!"

The moment he said it, Misaki tightly gripped Ryousei's clothes.

"...Going."

Ryousei's heart skipped a beat.

"Going... together."
"...No, but, it's better if you don't know what the present is—"
"Going!"

*W-w-what is happening?!* Ryousei's heart wavered.
He had never seen Misaki this proactive before.
In other words, Ryousei had no way to resist.

"Alright, let's go."
"...Mm!"

---

Walking, taking the bus, and walking again—it took about an hour in total. Ryousei and Misaki arrived at the nearest large shopping mall.

Along the way, Ryousei was filled with happiness. The weight he felt through her gripping fingers, the rhythm of their walking that could only be felt because they were holding hands—every sensation was fresh, making him feel even more like a parent.

He was so happy he almost started skipping, but he held himself back so he wouldn't end up pulling Misaki along.

Before boarding the bus, Ryousei had sighed because the trains were stopped due to the snow that fell yesterday, but upon arriving at the mall, he let out a sigh for a different reason.

The illuminations and decorations prepared for Christmas remained, and looking at them dusted in snow made him feel as if he had wandered into a completely different world. The giant tree in the center was especially breathtaking; surely, many people would gather around it at night.

As Ryousei stood there, groups of young people and families passed by them one after another.

When he happened to glance at Misaki, their eyes met immediately. Misaki blinked a few times, her mouth forming a straight line.

Just as he wondered what was wrong, a soft puff of white breath escaped Misaki's nose. Seeing that, Ryousei realized Misaki had smiled.

"Was that funny?"

When he asked, Misaki quickly looked down.

"Misaki? Is something wrong?"

Thinking she had looked away from him, Ryousei spoke in a flustered manner.
Misaki remained looking down for a while, but eventually, she slowly raised her face.

"...Out with Ryo-kun."
"Yeah, that's right."

After a brief pause of a few seconds,

"Happy."

Misaki showed him a beaming smile.

"Misaki!!"

Overcome with emotion once again, Ryousei lifted Misaki up and spun her around. Misaki flailed her limbs, but her face was, as expected, full of joy.

People passed by them, remarking, "Oh my, what a close parent and child," but the two of them saw nothing but each other.

When Misaki was finally set back on the ground, she stumbled slightly, perhaps because he had spun her a bit too much, and leaned against Ryousei.

She had simply lost her balance; there was no way it *wasn't* because she wanted to cling to Ryo-kun.

"...Hard."

Misaki squished Ryousei's leg.
After that, she squished her own leg.

"Squishy."

With a puzzled look, Misaki squished her legs and his alternately.
Ryousei watched her for a moment, thinking it was funny, before saying in an amused voice,

"That's because Misaki is a girl."
"A girl."

Misaki remembered what she had talked about with Mayu-chan in the bath. When she had asked why Ryo-kun didn't join them, she felt she had received a similar answer.

"Difference... between men and women?"
"Yes, the difference between men and women. You knew words like that, Misaki\~?"

Ryousei ruffled her hair. Misaki stood on her tiptoes and offered her head to make it easier for him to pet her.

"By the way, where did you learn that?"
"Mayu-chan... said so."
"I see, Kohinata-san, huh\~"

Since it was Kohinata-san, the one who draws *those* kinds of manga, Ryousei figured she must have explained it very thoroughly. At first, he wondered if it was something appropriate to teach a lower-elementary student, but then again, if it was Kohinata-san, he could rest easy.

*Can he really... rest easy?*

"By the way, what kind of things did she teach you?"
"Hmm, various things?"
"I see, various things, huh."

He wanted to trust Kohinata-san.
However, he also felt a sense of duty to confirm the details.

After a brief internal struggle, Ryousei decided to trust his neighbor.

"Shall we go?"

Ryousei held out his hand.
Misaki gave a small nod and grasped it.

"Misaki, is there anything you want?"
"...Memories?"
"Memories?"
"Mm."

To Ryousei, who had reflexively asked for clarification, Misaki spoke in a happy voice.

"Misaki, Ryo-kun, together..."

Using her usual unique way of speaking, but with a voice clearer than usual,

"Memories."

Misaki said it once more.

"Misaki!!"

Of course, being overcome with emotion, Ryousei lifted Misaki up and began to spin her—

"How long are you going to keep doing that!"

Ryosei evaded the completely unexpected attack by a hair's breadth. Using a backstep to leverage his long legs and create distance from the assailant, Ryousei pulled Misaki into a protective embrace and glared at the attacker.

"Eh, wait, he dodged it?"

The attacker looked at her own hands with a blank expression.
As Ryousei prepared for combat, thinking, *What the hell is this woman's angle?!*, he suddenly realized he recognized her.

"What, Akane? You gave me a scare."
"What do you mean, 'what'?"

Akane showed a slightly displeased expression.
She approached the two of them, her long hair swaying.

"What's with this kid?"

She asked, staring intently at Misaki, whom Ryousei was holding.

"Who?"

Despite being glared at by what looked like a scary gyaru, Misaki responded with a dignified attitude.

"Misaki is Misaki. This is Akane."

After Ryousei's introduction, the two stared intently at each other's faces.
Eventually, Akane spoke to Ryousei while keeping her eyes on Misaki.

"A relative's kid or something?"
"No, as you can see, we're parent and child."

*Though it's a bit of a stretch,* Ryousei added mentally.

"...Ryosei, were you married?"
"No."
"But you just said parent and child."
"Well, there's a lot of things to it."
"A lot of things...?"
"Yeah, a lot."

Hearing Ryosei's reply, Akane frowned and fell silent.
She seemed busy shaking her head and glaring, but only she knew what she was thinking.

"Are you okay?"

Prompted by Misaki's voice, Akane snapped out of it.

"You... what?"
"Hmm\~?"

Misaki tilted her head at the philosophical question.
Ryousei felt that Akane's attitude was harsh, but Misaki didn't seem to mind, and more than anything, he found watching her reaction entertaining, so he decided to just watch quietly.

Some time had passed since they last met, but if the person in front of him was the Akane he knew, she shouldn't be a threat.

"Is this person your papa?"
"Ryo-kun."
"Is he your big brother?"
"Ryo-kun."

Realizing this was a lost cause, Akane turned her eyes to Ryosei, demanding an explanation.

"Explaining my relationship with Misaki would take a long time. Just don't worry about it."
"...I'm asking *because* I'm worried."

After muttering in a small voice, she looked at Misaki once more.
A few seconds later, she turned her eyes back to Ryosei and spoke.

"I've got things to do. Tell me all about it some other time."
"Got it. By the way, what are these 'things'?"
"Something like a party."
"I see. Have fun."

Akane nodded, looked at Misaki's face one last time, and left the area.
After seeing Akane off as she looked back several times, Ryosei spoke to Misaki.

"Misaki, that girl seemed to be in a bad mood, was she scary?"
"...Mm."

She nodded that she was fine, and then added,

"She's big."
"Haha, I see. She certainly is tall."

While Misaki sat in the arms of the chuckling Ryosei, her eyes moved slowly.

"Difference... between men and women."
"That girl is a woman, you know?"
"...Mm."

*I know,* Misaki nodded while looking at Ryosei's chest.
Ryousei wondered, *What does she mean by that?*, as he set Misaki down on the ground.

"Alright, let's go."

Holding hands once again, the two of them finally began to walk.
Immediately after, they spotted a familiar face ahead.

"Yo, working again today?"

Ryosei called out as he saw Yui in her suit.
Beside her, Misaki also raised her hand from a low position and said, "Yo."

"..."

Normally, Yui would greet him with some unnecessary sarcasm, but today, she was silent.

Ryosei froze, wondering why.
Eventually, Yui let out a sharp sigh and spoke rapidly.

"Yes, that's right, it's work, so excuse me."

With that, she walked briskly past them.
After watching her back, Ryosei spoke to Misaki.

"She seemed to be in a bad mood."
"...Mm."

*Yeah,* Misaki nodded.
Thinking to himself that today was quite a day for encountering grumpy acquaintances, Ryosei finally started walking again.

"At this rate, I'll probably run into Kohinata-san too."
"...Mm."

*Yeah,* Misaki nodded.
In the end, they did not encounter Mayumi, and the two of them enjoyed their shopping trip.
